About SOL

What is SOL?

SOL is the student association for development co-operation in the Netherlands, housed in Leiden. SOL works on knowledge building about development co-operation and strengthens the support for development co-operation among students. We believe that within every field of study you can find important links with development co-operation. In an easy and accessible way, SOL gives you the chance to broaden your knowledge on development co-operation, to build a network and to gain relevant skills. SOL is also part of the U8, a global student partnership for development.

What does SOL do?

Students who want to get involved with development co-operation are welcome to visit SOL's lectures, debates, congresses and movie nights. Students who want to become more actively involved can join our workshops, network lounges and study tours. Finally, SOL will help you to find appropriate internships, volunteer work and jobs within the development sector. With joining SOL, you increase your job opportunities. NOTE: although international students are very welcome at SOL, not yet all of SOL's activities are in English.

Why SOL?

Nowadays, students look beyond their field of study. They feel involved with world issues en look for in-depth knowledge and debate. The different studies cover these requests only to a certain extend. Many questions remain unanswered: what is the use of development co-operation? How and where is development co-operation effective? How do I fit into the picture? At SOL these and other important issues are addressed.

Activities

This is your chance to come in contact with American statistician Nic Marks, who introduced the Happy Planet Index. His movie on TED shows his enthusiasm to make us think about the question how can we, the world, be happy? More importantly, how can both the planet ánd the people be happy at the same time?

SOL is proud to present an afternoon with Nic Marks at the Hogeschool of Amsterdam on the 25th of November (15-17h). Together with students from all over Holland we will discuss with him the topic ‘Happy people and happy planet: dream or reality?’. Do you want to contribute even more to the afternoon? Send us an e-mail and maybe you will be on the stage together with Nic to discuss your ideas on his Index! Subscription at www.soleiden.nl

In addition to this event an evening session is organized by the Club of Amsterdam.
