The selected candidate will help with successful planning, implementation and evaluation of the IDEA Youth Forum, hallmark event of the IDEA NL.

About the project:
For eighteenth time in row IDEA and its partners will host 250 young people from over 40 countries of the world at its annual summer event- the IDEA Youth Forum. IDEA Youth Forum is organized by International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and Open Society Foundations- Youth Initiative, in cooperation with local hosts, this year The University of Leon in Mexico and IDEA Mexico. The 2012 IDEA Youth Forum will take place in Leon, Mexico between July 2 and July 16, 2012. . The official language of instruction is English. The Youth Forum combines elements of competition, education, intercultural communication and bringing new people into the world of debating and inter-cultural learning. As the event brings together diverse international audience, it helps us to implement new ideas into the existing debate network and advance the overall quality of debating within our network. In addition it empowers youth by developing their life skills and by building contacts and international networks. On top of that via the means of peer to peer learning and facilitated informal interaction, the event helps finding out what is going on for people in their country. Social events provide the opportunity to find out more about the host country and boost the debating community in that country.
Tasks assigned to the Interim Youth Forum assistant include but are not exclusive to:
1. Assist with external communication about the Forum – maintaining the Forum website, providing technical assistance with editing and publishing an electronic Forum newsletter (bi-weekly)
2. Communicate with the local organizers to ensure that IDEA Forum Standards are implemented and that the preparation of the event is on time
3. Communicate with the participants, registering them, dealing with visa issues and providing information about the Forum
4. Help the Forum Director to supervise the daily logistical activities at the Forum (July 16-August 3)
5. Helping the Forum Director with evaluation of the project during and after the event and (narrative and financial) reporting.
6. Is 20 days available in June/July to assist the Forum Director and the University of Leon during the Youth Forum in Mexico.
Requirements and qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in relevant field and/or two more years of demonstrated experience in organizing youth events
• Superb organization skills (project management and coordination), including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be proactive
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment
• Strong public speaking and written communication skills in English language
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and multitask
• Strategic thinker who is able to deliver results in shifting and fast developing environment
• Self-disciplined and motivate individual, who is willing to learn and work independently
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and adequate computers skills (comfortable with navigating through www, operating with newsgroups, search engines, chats, blogs, social media etc)
• Excellent command of English language is required; other languages are of an advantage especially Spanish.
• Experience in debate (debater, coach, trainer, adjudicator, administrator) is of an advantage

Gezocht: Jongerenvertegenwoordiger Duurzame Ontwikkeling

Ben jij geïnteresseerd in duurzame ontwikkeling? Wil jij de stem van jongeren laten horen op de volgende klimaattop en tijdens Rio+20? En volg jij met Nederlandse scholieren het klimaatdieet? Als jongerenvertegenwoordiger vorm je de schakel tussen jongeren en politici en beleidsmakers. Je gaat actief op zoek naar de meningen en ideeën van jongeren en bespreekt die met onder andere ministers. Ontzettend leuk en goed voor je cv natuurlijk want als Jongerenvertegenwoordiger:
* geef je workshops en gastlessen
* ontwikkel je vaardigheden in lesgeven, debatteren en overtuigen
* leer je spreken voor zowel politici als jongeren
* bouw je een netwerk op hoog niveau op
* krijg je een hoop diplomatieke ervaring
* spreek je op toonaangevende (internationale) bijeenkomsten
Als Jongerenvertegenwoordiger Duurzame Ontwikkeling houd je je bezig met je raadt het al: duurzaamheid! Op het gebied van duurzame ontwikkeling valt er nog heel wat te halen. Input voor duurzame onderwerpen haal je bij jongeren. Dit doe je onder andere door gastlessen en workshops te geven op scholen. Alle input die je verzamelt bespreek je o.a. met politici, beleidsmakers en officiële regeringsdelegaties.
Het jongerenstandpunt draag je bijvoorbeeld uit tijdens de VN commissie voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling in New York en tijdens de Rio+20 top in juni. Alles wat je bij deze VN conferenties meemaakt en beleeft, koppel je terug aan de Nederlandse jongeren. Wanneer je met deze jongeren spreekt, zul je merken dat je genoeg ideeën en meningen verzamelt om een half jaar later tijdens de klimaattop het jongerenstandpunt uit te dragen. Zo hebben de Jongerenvertegenwoordigers Duurzame Ontwikkeling afgelopen december tijdens de klimaattop in Durban met een heleboel vertegenwoordigers gesproken over de tips van jongeren. Het is ze zelfs gelukt om hun jongerenstandpunten ook echt in het klimaatakkoord te krijgen!
Verder ben je actief betrokken bij relevante projecten van NJR en natuurlijk word je ook vanuit NJR begeleid. Je hoeft dit niet allemaal in je eentje te doen. Er zijn namelijk altijd twee jongerenvertegenwoordigers met hetzelfde thema bezig. Jouw toekomstige collega is Liset Meddens. Zij is al een jaar bezig en kan je precies vertellen hoe je je nieuwe functie kunt aanpakken. Ook bij de werkgroep Jong & Duurzaam – een enthousiaste groep duurzame jongeren – kan je aankloppen voor hulp.
Voorwaarden om je op te geven zijn:
* je beheerst de Nederlandse en Engelse taal goed
* je bent op 1 maart 2012 tussen de 18 en 25 jaar
* je hebt de Nederlandse nationaliteit
* je bent bereid je gemiddeld 20 uur per week in te zetten voor een periode van twee jaar

Hogeschool Leiden: post-hbo opleiding 'International Sustainable Development'

'International Sustainable Development, postgraduate course for professionals in business and society'
Op 5 april 2012 start International Sustainable Development, een part-time opleiding op post-hbo-niveau, gericht op maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen (MVO) in de internationale context van opkomende markten en ontwikkelingslanden. Doel van de Engelstalige opleiding is om professionals te trainen die effectiever kunnen bijdragen aan het verduurzamingsproces van hun onderneming; de opleiding is niet alleen bedoeld voor medewerkers die bijdragen aan de vorming van beleid m.b.t. duurzaamheid/mvo, maar juist ook voor medewerkers die dit beleid vervolgens moeten integreren en uitvoeren in hun dagelijkse werk.
International Sustainable Development onderscheidt zich van andere opleidingen op het gebied van duurzaamheid en MVO door de focus op:
- een internationale context (met name opkomende markten en ontwikkelingslanden);
- zowel profit als non-profit sectoren en de samenwerking daartussen;
- vaardigheden (bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van verander- en value chain management, cross-sector partnerschappen en interculture samenwerking/onderhandeling);
- praktijkgerichtheid (veel nadruk op directe toepasbaarheid in de werksituatie van de deelnemers).
De opleiding bestaat uit vijf modules die ook apart als korte cursus te volgen zijn; de opzet en inhoud worden verder toegelicht op

Gezocht: Project assistent 1% CLUB

De 1%CLUB is dé internationale marktplaats die slimme ontwikkelingsprojecten koppelt aan mensen, geld en kennis. Inmiddels hebben we meer dan 8500 1%LEDEN, en al meer dan 200 1%PROJECTEN gerealiseerd in allerlei landen op de DAC-lijst.
Bij de 1%CLUB willen we vernieuwend zijn en staan we voor Internationale Samenwerking 2.0. Omdat we meer willen zijn dan een donatieplatform, starten we met een nieuwe functie: de 1%EXPERTS. Niemand heeft het antwoord op alle vragen, maar door mensen te stimuleren hun kennis en ervaring in te zetten en te delen met en voor andere mensen, komen we in ieder geval een hele stap verder. 'Wisdom of the crowd' is het idee, maar daarvoor hebben we wel een grote 'crowd' nodig!
Als 1%EXPERT zet je vrijwillig één ochtend/middag/avond in per maand voor de 1%CLUB. Je doet dit op de momenten dat het jou uitkomt. Je gaat online naar de website van de 1%CLUB en verdiept je in de projecten die jou aanspreken. Daarna aan jou de taak om kritische vragen en tips te geven, waardoor er discussie op gang komt en kennis wordt uitgewisseld, waardoor uiteindelijk de impact van het project groter wordt! Zodra we een grote groep 1%EXPERTS hebben, wordt het ook via de website mogelijk dat mensen vragen stellen aan de 1%EXPERT.
In onze visie kan iedereen een 1%EXPERT worden. Het is een leuke functie die goed voor je CV is, niet te intensief (1x per maand), flexibel, maar wel echt een leuke & interessante manier om concreet met je ervaring en kennis uit studieboeken aan de slag te gaan! Gezocht: Stageverslagen over ontwikkelingssamenwerking

Wereldhulporganisaties zoekt studenten die in het buitenland stage hebben gelopen en hun stageverslagen willen vrijgeven voor in het expertisecentrum van het betreffende land. Op deze manier wordt de verzamelde kennis gedeeld met stichtingen, particulieren initiatieven en andere geinterseerden.
De bedoeling van het expertisecentrum is het verzamelen van zoveel mogelijk informatie, over het land, het project, de uitgevoerde werkzaamheden, maar ook de problemen die men tegenkomt en de - soms zeer creatieve - oplossingen. Dat wil ook zeggen dat er maar weinig criteria zijn voor de verzamelde informatie. Uiteraard kunnen wij kwetsende of foutieve informatie niet op onze site zetten. Voor het overige, kan ik overleg bepaald worden of en waar de informatie geplaatst wordt. Meer uitleg en de criteria waar aan verslagen moeten voldoen is in overleg met Petra van Haandel, werkzaam bij Wereldhulporganisaties (
www.wereldhulporganisaties.nl).
Intresse gekregen? De studenten kunnen de verslagen sturen naar Petra van Haandel (
petra@worldaidunited.org). Zij zorgt dan dat de verslagen in het expertisecentrum van het betreffende land worden geplaatst. Natuurlijk kunnen de studenten ook hun eigen project aanmaken, liefst in overleg met de betreffende stichtingen of particuliere initiatieven. Het aanmaken van een project geeft de studenten de mogelijkheid om een blog bij te houden en vrienden uit te nodigen om het project te volgen. Het is ook mogelijk om de blogs/projecten direct op Facebook te plaatsen. Wanneer gewenst, zorgen zij dat de projecten in het Engels vertaald worden (in een later stadium volgen ook andere talen). De vertaalde projecten worden dan automatisch geplaatst op de Engelse website
www.worldaidunited.org. Daarnaast genereren zij verdere aandacht voor de informatie via Twitter en Facebook. Dit is dus de ultime kans om een steentje bij te dragen aan kennis over ontwikkelingswerk en ontwikkelingslanden!
SID: Student Essay Contest

SID Student Essay Contest
Always wanted to have dinner with a great thinker like Paul Collier, William Easterly, Martin Wolf or Ruud Lubbers? Write an essay in preparation of one of the SID-lectures and you might be joining the expert dinner with the main speaker or even win the SID Award.
For more than ten years SID Netherlands organizes monthly lectures at the VU University. International speakers are invited to share their views on issues related to international cooperation. The SID lecture series have focussed on themes such as democracy, religion, economic growth and migration. Global challenges such as climate change are being dealt with, as well as the provision of global public goods such as democracy, security, law and order.
In the 2011-2012 academic year, the monthly SID-lectures deal with the concept and role of the state in the current world order, each with a different starting point and perspective. During this series there will be three opportunities to participate in the essay-contest by writing a personal account on why this lecture and the speaker is important for a) your study, and b) the problems in the world you think are most pressing. The writer of the best essay will be given the opportunity to act as second respondent to open the discussion, and to join the discussion dinner after the lecture. At the end of the year, the jury will assess which of the three winners wrote the best essay and who wins the SID Award. This award will be given during the annual SID Conference in The Hague. Selected essays might also be included in the compilation of the SID-lecture series, published by KIT Publishers. Being a nominee or, better yet, winning the SID Student Essay Contest looks excellent on your Résumé, demonstrating your persuasive writing skills and your interest in the topic.
A jury of experts will be carefully screening the essays. The jury includes Mr. Kees Kouwenaar (Director CIS) and Prof. Frank Biermann (professor of political science and environmental policy sciences, VU).
Rules and requirements for the SID Student Essay Contest
- You must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at a Higher Education Institution for 2011/2012.
- Submissions must be written in English and between 1200 – 1500 words, excluding bibliography, references and footnotes. All quotations or uncommon facts should be appropriately cited. Entries must be original, unpublished work written by contestants themselves. Your entry must include a statement that the essay is your own work.
- You are only allowed one entry for each of the following lectures:
1. January 16, 2012 - Alcides Costa Vaz – ‘Multipolarity of states or regions?’
(Deadline submission essay: 2 January 2012)
2. March 26, 2012 – James Cameron – ‘‘The State and global common goods: the challenge of interdependency’
(Deadline submission essay: 12 March 2012)
3. May 21, 2012 - Tak-Wing Ngo – ‘The relevance of the state for market and civil society’
(Deadline submission essay: 7 May 2012)
- Your entry must be submitted electronically as a .doc, .docx or .pdf file to sid.award@vu.nl two weeks before the actual lecture. Your entry must clearly state your full name, university and the programme in which you are enrolled, university email address, telephone number.
- Contestants have to be present at the related lecture.
- Essays will be judged on the following criteria:
1. Effectiveness, insightfulness, creativity, and completeness.
2. Organization and development of ideas expressed, with clear and appropriate examples or references to support them.
3. Consistency in the use of language, variety in sentence structure and range of vocabulary, use of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
